Making a gift with your newborn’s keepsakes is a great way to display all those hospital bands and newborn hats in a unique way. When I came home from the hospital I was very excited about this new adventure on which my husband and I were about to embark. I was also very tired from four long days in the hospital with no sleep. Needless to say when we finally had a chance to settle down we were solely focused on our newborn and making sure he was comfortable.
While in the hospital the nurses had me wear about five different wristbands. All had information stating everything to what I’m allergic to and a monitor just in case someone steals my child and runs out the front door with him. ? They were very annoying to wear. I was constantly readjusting them and trying not to scrape the baby on his precious, soft skin.
When we were being discharged they cut all off except for two. My husband had one as well and our newborn had two. Once we went into our bedroom at home I immediately grabbed scissors and cut mine off. My husband and baby soon followed. I kept them in hopes I could display them nicely or put them in a cute box of some kind.
Nothing came of these items for a month. My husband’s birthday was approaching and I couldn’t think of anything to get him. We both have an agreement not to go too crazy for each others birthdays. I would brainstorm and search Pinterest for some different ideas. Once I had a direction I came up with this little number:
Items Used and Steps
1. Shadow Box
The first item is the big ticket one which is the shadow box. I shopped around Hobby Lobby until I found the right one. If you don’t have a Hobby Lobby near you, this Shadow Box is pretty close to the one I used.
2. Scrapbook Paper
I then found some scrapbooking paper at Hobby Lobby that had more of a rustic feel to it. Something similar you can use is this: Against the Grain 12×12 Scrapbooking Paper Pad Rustic Wood, Chipped Paint. Remember to keep in mind the size of the shadow box you purchased. Mine was 11×16 and I had could only find paper that was 12×12. So I had to combine the two pieces so they would look seamless.
3. The main ingredient!
Gather all your trinkets that you would like to display. I decided to use the beanie they put on my baby as soon as he came out of the womb. I washed it first since it had some blood left over on it.
4. Pictures
On the day he was born the hospital photographer came by to see if we would like some pictures taken. The line they used was “we are going to take some complimentary photos of your new baby.” Me, being still out of it from giving birth and lack of sleep, gave the okay. As soon as they started posing him in random positions and the photographer showed me the photos that she took of him, it hit me that this was going to cost money. Of course, they show you their packages when they are done and the prices. I looked at my husband and said, “now we have to buy them since he was so darn cute!” He didn’t object. So those pictures were added to the shadow box.
5. Cut if you have to
Next, make sure you size up your scrapbook paper and tape it to the back of the shadow box.
6. Stick it all down
Then take Glue Dots and stick them to the backs of each item. At first, I used tape but over time everything started to peel off and fall inside of the shadow box.
You now made a gift with your newborn’s keepsakes
Put it all together and you are ALL DONE!
Now you have a wonderful gift of your newborn’s keepsakes!
My husband loved it and was so appreciative!
