I have been asked, “Are you ready to get out of the house?” or “I bet you can’t wait to get out,” a few times since my son was born. To be honest, I like to stay at home.
Many of you may understand where I am coming from when I say I like to stay at home. Some reasons for staying at home may be because having to maneuver with children proves to be difficult or when you do go out it is usually just to run errands. For me, it is those things but it is so much more.
Before having a child
I used to work a typical 9-5 job before giving birth. It wasn’t too physically demanding but it would get monotonous sometimes. Granted the job had occasional situations that had you running around but for the most part it was easy.
Before that job, I had one that demanded at least 60 hours per week. On top of that, I had to drive an hour to and from work. I would have to wake up at 5 a.m. in order to get ready on time. This was the hard part because I never got up on the first alarm. It usually took me about 30-45 minutes to get ready including eating breakfast. Then by 6 a.m.-ish, I would hit the road. I made sure I had time to spare just in case I hit the school bus traffic. Work would start at 8 a.m. and would finish at 6:30 p.m. An hour drive home and then bedtime at about 9 p.m. This happened Monday through Saturday. Can you see how I might have been burnt out by Sunday? Most days off I wanted to stay at home and do nothing. Unfortunately, I had obligations on Sundays and still had to run errands. Needless to say, it always felt like a long week. Luckily this was contracted work so it didn’t last more than six months at a time if I didn’t want to extend. I did this off and on for over two years. I was over it after my last assignment ended.
At that time we really wanted to start a family so we made it a point to make sure the next job I took was going to be more manageable.
Fast forward, why I like to stay at home
Now back to those questions or statements others were asking me. I absolutely love being at home all the time. Since Oliver’s birth, I have noticed we rarely go out anymore. Even before he was born we didn’t go out much because of our very tight budget. I have experienced jobs that have been demanding of my time and jobs that are your typical 40 hour work weeks. So when the opportunity came up to work from home and make my own hours I immediately jumped on it. Plus it gives me more time to blog! Career-wise blogging is what I truly am excited to do. This gives me more of a reason to stay home and work on my business.
Not very fond of the idea of putting my child in daycare
Of course being a new mommy and not having to shove him in daycare is a priority. I would hate to have to put Oliver in daycare. I feel like I would miss out on so much of his development. Have you ever priced out daycare? “Whoa,” is all I have to say. I have family members that pay over $250 a week just for one child. Ouch! I will never do that unless I absolutely have to. It helps to have friends or family around to babysit and it’s even better when they do it out of love. ?
So you see after work life takes you for a whirlwind you appreciate being at home. There are times I might get bored because of no adult interaction but I almost always find something to do that involves developing this blog or cleaning.
Do you like staying at home? Tell me about it! I bet some of your lives are or were a lot more hectic than mine. So to appreciate the being-at-home life I’m sure is something a lot of us are living or taking the necessary steps to get there.
